1. Barbera.

If you have ever had a carafe of wine at an Italian restaurant or your neighborhood pizza joint this is the wine that you were probably served. Great with lasagna, spaghetti bolognese and yes – pizza.

2. Cabernet Sauvignon.

ranging from medium to full bodied this red is one of the most popular in the world. Characterized by taste forward tones of blackcurrant fruit and firm tannins. This is a wine that can go head to head with aggressive flavors and bring out the best in them while shining itself. Classic dishes to pair with a Cabernet Sauvignon include roast lamb with hints of citrus or a beef fillet. It also provides great fun at a barbecue where it can pair well wtih ribs or even a simple burger.

3. Merlot.

Merlot has in recent years gathered a cult following. It is an incredibly versatile wine that pairs with many foods but also provides a rewarding experience when simply enjoyed on its own. tastes of rich berries, hints of tobacco on the nose and subtle vanilla / coconut highlights bring a complexity to the taste profile that explains the growing popularity of Merlot. This is a great wine to enjoy with poultry. Turkey and cranberry sauce, duck cooked in red wine and even a humble chicken casserole will be taken to new heights by being paired with Merlot.

4. Pinot Noir.

The medium bodied nature of Pinot make it the perfect accompaniment for meals that might require an extended seat at the table – such as the multiple courses served at a Christmas dinner (besides which is pairs wonderfully with roasts such as turkey or lamb). It also goes great with a varied cheese plate. Keep the cheese mild so that the wine can shine.
